Hiking on the magic island of la Gomera

La Gomera with its pleasant climate is wonderfully suited for walking and hiking tours. The old road systems in a varied landscape offer ideal walking conditions. Anyone who would like to discover this breathtaking beauty, has to join us. Its no exaggeration from tour manager/guide DUMONT to describe la Gomera as the ultimate holiday destination for nature minded tourists.
You can find here absolute rest ,quiet and peaceful beaches, sunshine and on top of that entertainment, sports, good food and pleasant bars. Deep ravines emboss la Gomera. From all sides they cut through the mountains to the sea. In the villages in the north, flourish bananas and other tropical fruits. In the south a desert like sparsely populated landscape with lonely
Beaches prevails. Humid moss covered forest roads pull through the island centre, the national park ”parque national de Garajonay”, named after the highest mountain Garajonay (1487m).
Jungle like laurel forest covers the mountain region of the national park. Carefully layed out paved mountain trails, once serving pilgrims, goats,woodcollectors and traders, open up the ravines for the hiker.

We are the PILOTO TOURS team in Hermigua, la Gomera, and we invite you to discover the breathtaking beauty and magic of la Gomera. We offer 7 days HIKING HOLIDAYS. Included are 6 hiking tours all over la Gomera. On average these walks take between 4 and 6 hours. The hiking tours are not particularly hard, but with a tough climb now and then which require a certain fitnesscondition. One boot trip and a visit to eco-site “ CABO VERDE” with a barbecue are also part of the offer.

Our guides Kalay speak English, German and Spanish. They will show and explain the flora, fauna and many other things you will encounter during the trips.

We will have breakfast at 8.00h. Everyone can take what he likes from the buffet. We will have muesli, cold cuts, various fruits, eco marmalade, honey and especially the famous palm honey...and “queso de cabra”. Enough to satisfy the appetite from the strenuous hiking. Diner will be served at 20.00h and is prepared by TXUS personally …
for example on sea salt grilled fresh fish “ persado fresco”, or various other specialities of the house, which are inspired by Atlantic/ Canary and Caribbean/ African influences.

DESCRIPTION OF THE HIKING TOURS

TOUR VALLEHERMOSO / HERMIGUA:

Vallehermoso is the village of the palm honey. The tour starts at the village square. After a beautiful climb we reach to the old volcano chimney “ roque Cano”. When we arrive at the area “Cruz de tierno”, we walk along the farm fields in the direction of “Juego de bolas”. When we are in luck and there are not to many “tourists” around, we can take a rest at the visitors centre.
The water reservoir of Agulo reminds us that we still have to master the“red wall” - the well known tough climb of Agulo -the prettiest village of la Gomera ?!?
We take a well earned coffee break in Agulo after which we walk the last leg through the banana plantations via “Lepe” to the “playa de hermigua”.

EPINA / VALLEHERMOSO:

We start at the famous “Chorros de Epina”, its water is said to provide healing, cleaning, luck and a great many more. With our view on Arguamul”, it is a long but easy walk, along the coastline to the chapel “Santa Clara”,
and further on past the chapel “nuestra Señora de Coromoto” to la Gomeras most northerly tip (from where la Palma is visible) and its impressive colourful moon landscape. The climb down leads to playa de Vallehermoso. From there, in the direction of the village , we will see the palms which are cut to produce the famous palm honey. The return to the office of PILOTO TOURS concludes the trip.

Tour ALTO GARAJONAY / CONTADERO / HERMIGUA:

The highest mountain of la Gomera is the “altoGarajonay” (1487 m). It is situated in the National park , which has the best kept eco system in the Canaries. We will pass through the “el Cedro” area, the mysterious Laurel forest (laurisilva), one of the oldest rainforests.

After a short break near the chapel (nta.sra. De Lourdes) we walk towards a rather steep descent. We pass a waterfall ,we reach to a mountain village of Hermigua “ el Estanquillo”. We approach the end of the tour.

Only a pleasant return through the highest Hermigua regions down to the office of PILOTO TOURS remains.

ALTO CONTADERO (ACEVIÑOS) / HERMIGUA :

This quiet laurel forest walking tour starts with a shady descent to the hidden little village “ el Cedro”. The path, with a short steep ascent over a mountain ridge, leads downwards to the isolated “los Aceviños”, a fantastic panorama reveals Hermigua. Downwards through the terraced landscape to “Ermita de San Juan “ which is visible in the distance. We take a rest at this little church where we can admire the view until we arrive in Hermigua via broad steps.

Tour ROQUE DE AGANDO / BENCHIJIGUA / SANTIAGO:

In the south where the famous “fire mountain” of the island “roque de Agando” is situated. We will start this tour with a climb down into the valley of “Benchijigua” with its impressive wild agaves and almond trees.
When we are past the palm trees and the cultivated terraces we see the villages “ Lo de Gato” , “Pastrana” and “Taco”.
In Santiago we take a long rest to get the feeling of a “real tourist “.
After that we return to the office of PILOTO TOURS in Hermigua.

TOUR PAJARITO /TARGA

TOUR DEGOLLADA DE PERAZA:

The footpath to “la Laja” with its broad steps starts immediately next to the “Degollada de Peraza” the road descends rapidly. Far below we can see parts of the village. We pass a small spring which flows along side for a while. On we go to the mountains. After we reach the height of the pass it goes quickly downwards through the fig trees and endless palm groves until “la Laja”.
Having passed this idyllic village, a long climb awaits us during which we will encounter typical Canary gorges and enormous Eucalyptus roots. ”Roque de la Zarcita “ and “Roque de Ojila” loom in the distance. Shortly we will cross the main road and find our selves on the interesting foot path to “Ermita de las nierves” which we walk along until we return to our starting point.

Tour Jerdune / SAN SEBASTIAN:

The small abandoned village “ Jerduñe” at the south side of the island is our starting point. Over the paved village roads we reach the old shepherd roads which lead us to really interesting cave houses.

The abandoned village “Seimar” causes us to wonder how the native Gomeras (Guanches) could live like this. Next is a climb down into the valley of San Sebastian from where we have a wonderful view fon the “playa de la Guancha”.

We take a break on this peaceful and beautiful beach, which can only be reached by foot.The following walk is a lot easier. After a small climb we pass the monument “ al sagrado corazón de Jesus ” on our way to the capital “San Sebastian”. The bus trip back “home” will be a welcome break after this long trip.

TOUR HERMIGUA (LAS ROSAS,JUEGO DE BOLAS) / AGULO

Tour SAN JUAN / HERMIGUA:

This tour is a walk around the village of Hermigua, in order to enjoy its view from above. We start at the highest situated chapel “ San Juan “ and from there via the ancient route from Hermigua to “los Aceviños”.

Along the left mountain ridge, on which we walk, we have a breathtaking view down to Hermigua. On our way we will encounter a rather tough descent.
Having mastered that, we only have an easy walk down to the office PILOTO TOURS.

TOUR HERMIGUA (CALETA) / EL PALMAR

Through the village to” playa de hermigua” and from there we walk in the direction of Caleta. A light short rise and we circle through the area of “ el Palmar” and “Moralito”. On our return we pass the region “ Montoro”, a well known winegrowing area ( vino blanco).

Tour SAN SEBASTIAN / HERMIGUA:

Shortly before the capital is the starting point of this tour. This is a serious TREKKING TOUR and also one of the longest we offer. Over “Majona”, ”casas de Enchereda”, the origin of the tasty goat cheese, As we walk we enjoy the magnificent panoramic view in the direction Hermigua. The pine forest, a possible place to find edible mushrooms, is an interesting part of this tour. Shortly before the area “ el Moralito” we will encounter a light climb. TOUR JERDUÑE / SANTIAGO

This hiking tour goes downwards most of the time. We start in a curve. The old road (camino) leads us down hill, into the “barranco del negro”. The following course leads over red rocks, south wards with the view on the villages “Jerduñe” and “Vegaipala” behind us. At the end of a serpentine climb we will spot a few houses which are build partly into caves
with relics from the past. We pass a group of houses ( casa de Contrera), which were invisible from above.
It is hard to imagine that once this plateau was used to grow cereals!
Our walk continues further south wards, and suddenly, straight ahead the overview of the big hotel complex “Tecina”.
Before reaching our goal Santiago however we have to cross three deeply cut gorges(barrancos). The first descendof 300m is followed by a 130m climb.
Before we do this however we will have the chance to rest and swim at the “playa del medio”.

BOOT TRIP :
Start the day with a serious breakfast ( or would you rather leave your stomach empty?) It all depends of your sea sensitivity! Because we will sail from the “ hot south” with the SIRON and hope NEPTUN agrees. The in Gomera well know SIRON is a former fishing vessel:
Free drinks and meals. And when we hook a fish we will enjoy “pescado fresco” (grilled fresh fish). Because viewed from the sea, la Gomera looks even more impressive, this will be the culmination of your holiday.

After Lunch there will be opportunity to swim in open sea in a small bay close to “ Santiago”. From there we will sail back to “ Valle Gran Rey”, where we leave you some time to look around by yourself. To conclude this day we invite you to diner and will return late in the evening to Hermigua.
